Before buying a Korea travel eSIM, the first thing you need to check is whether your phone actually supports eSIM. The good news: most phones made after 2018 do. The bad news: there are some exceptions โ and buying an eSIM for an incompatible phone means no refund.
This guide covers everything you need to know โ by brand, by model, and with a quick check tool so you can confirm in seconds.
What Makes a Phone eSIM Compatible?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM chip built directly into your phone. To use one, your phone needs:
- Hardware support โ the eSIM chip must be physically built into the device
- Software support โ the operating system must support eSIM provisioning
- Carrier unlock โ your phone must not be locked to a specific carrier
Go to Settings โ General โ About (iPhone) or dial *#06# (Android). If you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM.
๐ iPhone eSIM Compatibility
Apple introduced eSIM support with the iPhone XS and XR in 2018. All models from that point onwards support eSIM โ with a few important exceptions.
| Model | eSIM Support |
|---|---|
| iPhone 15 series (all models) | โ Yes |
| iPhone 14 series (all models) | โ Yes (US models: eSIM only) |
| iPhone 13 series (all models) | โ Yes |
| iPhone 12 series (all models) | โ Yes |
| iPhone SE (2020, 2022) | โ Yes |
| iPhone 11 series (all models) | โ Yes |
| iPhone XS / XS Max / XR | โ Yes |
| iPhone X and earlier | โ No |
| iPhones purchased in mainland China | โ No (all models) |
| iPhones from Hong Kong/Macao | โ Some models only |
If your iPhone was purchased in mainland China, it does not support eSIM โ regardless of the model. This applies to iPhone 13, 14, 15, and all other series bought in China.
๐ฑ Samsung Galaxy eSIM Compatibility
Samsung added eSIM support starting with the Galaxy S20 series. However, Samsung has more regional variations than Apple โ Korean models and US carrier models have different rules.
| Model | eSIM Support |
|---|---|
| Galaxy S24 series | โ Yes (international models) |
| Galaxy S23 series (incl. FE) | โ Yes (incl. Korean models) |
| Galaxy S22 series | โ Yes (international models) |
| Galaxy S21 series | โ International only (not Korean/US) |
| Galaxy S20 series | โ Yes (most international models) |
| Galaxy Z Fold 4 / 5 | โ Yes (incl. Korean models) |
| Galaxy Z Flip 4 / 5 | โ Yes (incl. Korean models) |

| Galaxy A54 5G | โ Varies by region |

Dial *#06# on your Samsung phone. If you see an EID number listed, your phone supports eSIM. No EID = no eSIM support.
๐ต Google Pixel eSIM Compatibility
Google Pixel phones have supported eSIM since the Pixel 3, with a few regional exceptions.
| Model | eSIM Support |
|---|---|
| Pixel 8 / 8 Pro | โ Yes |
| Pixel 7 / 7 Pro / 7a | โ Yes |
| Pixel 6 / 6 Pro / 6a | โ Yes |
| Pixel 5 / 4a (5G) | โ Yes |

| Pixel 3a / 3a XL | โ Not SE Asia or Verizon models |
| Pixel 2 and earlier | โ No |
The Carrier Lock Problem
Even if your phone supports eSIM, it won't work with a foreign eSIM if it's carrier locked. A carrier-locked phone is restricted to one network (e.g. Telstra, Optus, Vodafone) and can't accept eSIMs from other providers.
How to check if your phone is unlocked:
Insert a different SIM
Try putting a friend's SIM card in your phone. If it works, you're unlocked. If it says "SIM not supported", you're locked.
Check your iPhone settings
Go to Settings โ General โ About and look for "Carrier Lock". If it says "No SIM restrictions", you're unlocked.
Contact your carrier
Call or chat with Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone and ask if your device is unlocked. Most carriers will unlock for free after your contract ends.
If you bought your phone outright (not on a plan) directly from Apple, Samsung, or a retailer like JB Hi-Fi, it's almost certainly unlocked.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use two eSIMs at the same time?
Many newer phones support dual eSIM or one physical SIM + one eSIM. This means you can keep your home number active for calls while using your Korea eSIM for data. iPhone 13 and later, and most Galaxy S22+ models support this.
Will my eSIM work if I factory reset my phone?
A factory reset will delete your eSIM profile. You won't be able to reinstall it unless you have the original QR code and it hasn't already been used on another device. Always back up your eSIM details before resetting.
Can I transfer my eSIM to a new phone?
No. Each eSIM QR code is single-use and device-specific. If you get a new phone, you'll need to purchase a new eSIM.
Does my iPad support eSIM?
Most iPad models from 2018 onwards support eSIM, including iPad Air (3rd gen+), iPad Pro (all recent models), iPad Mini (5th gen+), and iPad (7th gen+). Only Wi-Fi + Cellular models support eSIM โ Wi-Fi only models do not.
